I am Legend Closing scene analysis

I Am Legend Closing Scene

Editing

A shot reverse shot is used between the protagonist and the women as he explains that he has given her the cure and that he will sacrifice himself for them and the future of humanity. This is used to show the emotional exchange between the characters which is used to provoke sadness
from the audience as they have watched their relationship grow and they will now watch it end. Will Smith is presented as the cliche hero, yet he doesn't get the cliche ending as he dies. There is the use of low key lighting that has an orange tinge to it because of the chaotic fire. The scene looks dark which reflects the mood of the sequence as the protagonist is about to die which also implies the genre as one of the key conventions is devastation.

Once the grenade it lit, the camera is engulfed with flames and then dissolves to a white flash. This white flash is almost angelic and could represent how the protagonist "sees the light" often something that in connotated with death, It then dissolves once more to an establishing shot of tree tops which is used to show the hope that is now found in the world.

Mise-en-scene

The costumes are significant as they are worn, torn and covered in blood which shows the hardship of the characters situation and what they have experienced to get to that point. All of the Darkseekers look the same; thin, bald, pale skin. They have a horde element and the loss of individuality shows their lack of humanity as humans thrive on their differences from one another.

The protagonist pulls out a picture of his family from the draw, this is used to give him the hope and strength to kill himself but save Earth. He has a little smile whilst looking at them which could suggest he is happy to die because he will be reunited with them.

The setting is a laboratory which is established through the scientific equipment and research, however it is in a dismal state with fires going off and a lot of setting being broken. There is a sense of claustrophobia to this location as there is now way out when it is underseige from the Darkseekers.

Sound

There not a massive amount of sound in the scene, however there is the diagetic sound of moaning and screamers from the darkseekers, which adds a sense of terror to the scene as it shows how inhumane these creatures that were once people are. Another diagetic sound is the loud banging of the darkseeker against the glass, this sound is getting louder which shows the escalation of the events.Towards the end of the sequence non-diagetic music begins to play, it a sad and depressing instrumental used  to compliment the heroic act of the protagonist.

Camera

There is a wide array of close up shots used in this sequence, the majority of them point out significant items such as at the beginning when the protagonist is take blood from the corpse. This shows the importance of this object as it will later be used to save humanity. Another close up is when the protagonist is admiring a picture of his family, this is used to show that whilst he may sacrifice himself, he knows that he will be reunited with them in death.

The scene repeats a medium shot of the broken glass and the darkseeker continuously slamming into it, this implies the genre and represents the convention of hopelessness as the protagonist is trapped.
Low angle shots are used on the protagonist to show that he is in a position of power, even with his own death. As the protagonist pull the pin on the grenade the camera slowly zooms in on in his face, this is used to add a dramatic effect to the scene
