Sound in film

Sound in film

Non-Diegetic: Is sound that doesn't belong in the film world and is a sound that the characters cannot hear. For example the voice over in The Roads opening sequence.

Diegetic- This is sound that exists in the film world and can be heard by the characters. For example dialogue and ambient sound.

Parallel sound- when the sounds on screen go hand in hand with what is happening in the scene. The sound is synced with the action going off on screen. For example

Contrapuntal -This is sound which contrasts or doesn't match what is happening on screen. It is used to confuse and disorientate the audience. An example of this is in Deadpool in which there is a brutal murder scene with the song Angel of the Morning playing in the background.

Sound Bridge-  This is when music or sounds are carried from one scene to another. It is used to create a link between scenes or to make a smooth transition.

Instrumental
Violin discord’s
The music mirrors the screaming of the victim. Both the scream and the violent are piercing to the ears. The music amplifies her screams with harsh, rasping sounds.
The music is both used to shock and upset the audience. The violin shatters the tension of silence which was given beforehand.
   Apocalypse now
Ride of The Valkyries by Richard Wagner
Many instruments are such as trumpets, horns and strings.
The music in the film is diegetic. The characters have but it on intentionally to scare the Vietnamese. It is very loud and epic music which give a sense of triumph even before the fighting has properly begun.
In a sense the music is almost comedic which heavily contrasts with the massacre at hand. It could be quite insensitive due to the situation which I think is intentional to show the soldiers mindset.
    Trainspotting
Lust for life by Iggy Pop
This song is used in the introduction of the film. The music is fast paced to match the chasing and football in the scene.
It makes the Scottish drug addicts seems like a barrel of giggles. It takes the seriousness of the situation away and even makes their lives feel enjoyable
     Rocky
Gonna Fly Now
A very iconic and upbeat song. It is used to represent Rocky’s determined attitude.

The song even though it is played during a training scene gives off the impression of victory. The music makes the audience believe in Rocky and his ability in which he is honing.
